Cairo : The Arab League has voiced concern over the coup in Mauritania.
It called in a statement the maintenance of democracy in Mauritania, and to solve all problems via national dialogue and away from the use of force.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa is following with concern the developments in Mauritania and the arrest of President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdullahi and other officials, said the statement Wednesday.
Moussa was quoted by the statement as saying that he was worried about this coup, and hoped democracy would remain the pillar of dialogue.
The Arab League is keen on the stability of Mauritania, said the statement.
Troops in Mauritania have earlier Wednesday overthrown the government and said they have formed a state council to rule the country.
Large numbers of soldiers have been seen on the streets, but there have been no reports of fighting.
The country staged free and fair elections in June 2007, two years after a military coup.
