By Xinhua,
Gaza : An Islamic Jihad leader Wednesday said his movement tries to end tension between feuding factions of Hamas and Fatah in Gaza Strip and West Bank.
“There are bids to release all Hamas and Fatah prisoners to contain the crisis which destroyed the efforts of achieving internal reconciliation,” said Mohammed al-Hendi, an Islamic Jihad leader.
The trend is to form a committee to investigate the number of political prisoners which Hamas holds in Gaza Strip and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement holds in West Bank, according to al-Hendi.
Hamas launched a crackdown against Fatah in Gaza Strip last month following a beachside blast that killed a girl and five Hamas members. The Islamic movement accused Fatah of being involved in the explosion, but Fatah denied.
Hundreds of Fatah supporters and leaders were arrested and dozens of charities and civil organizations which Hamas considers link to Fatah were closed.
In response, pro-Abbas forces in West Bank arrested tens of Hamas people to press the Islamic movement to free Fatah members in Gaza Strip.
The latest Gaza crackdown was the toughest against Fatah in months. Last summer, Hamas ousted Fatah and routed pro-Abbas forces and took over full control of the coastal strip.
