Brussels : The European Union’s (EU) executive Sunday offered one million euros ($1.5 million) in emergency aid to the victims of fighting in the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.
The aid is meant to “help cover the urgent humanitarian needs of thousands of civilians affected by the fighting in the region of South Ossetia and beyond in Georgia,” a statement from the European Commission announcing the measure said.
The support is meant to cover emergency medical assistance, water and sanitation, food and non-food items like blankets, clothes, kitchen-sets, emergency shelter and protection, the statement said.
Experts from the commission’s aid department, who have long had a presence in the Georgian rebel province of Abkhazia, are already in the region. The EU is ready to send more funds as soon as experts have assessed the situation on the ground, the statement said.
