Srinagar : Hours after senior Hurriyat leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz was killed in a firing incident while leading a march towards the Line of Control, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khuda Monday evening denied allegations that the police and paramilitary forces had used excessive force against protesters across the Valley.
“We exercised maximum restraint. Four people died in firing incidents today. More than 100 policemen were injured in clashes with the protesters who took out processions at 60 places across the Valley today,” the state police chief told media persons at a briefing here.
“All the firing incidents that took place today will be investigated in accordance with the law. We don’t want to use force against our people and I appeal to everybody to help in restoration of law and order. The media has a responsible role to play and I believe they understand their duties towards the society,” Khuda said.
State Home Commissioner, Anil Goswami, was also present at the briefing held inside the police control room in summer capital Srinagar.
The DGP said arrangements were being made for the funeral of the slain Hurriyat leader, who was killed in a firing incident in the north Kashmir Baramulla district where he led a huge procession of protesters marching to cross the Line of Control.
“We shall ensure that the funeral scheduled tomorrow (Tuesday) passes off peacefully. We will also try to ensure that other senior Hurriyat leaders are allowed to attend Sheikh Aziz’s burial,” the DGP said.
