Mahmoud Al-Zahar, a ranking member of the organization, that controls Gaza Strip, said in a statement broadcast by local radio stations that all Palestinian factions were in consensus on the necessity to maintain calm.

He accused gunners who fired the single missile from the strip in the direction of southern Israel of “being agents of Israel and launched the attack to furnish Tel Aviv with an execuse to exert pressure on the Palestinian people.” The Israeli side is trying to link up the issue of the missiles’ firing to the cause of the prisoners, he said. “We have rejected this approahc,” he said.

Al-Zahar also condemned Israel’s decision to shut all gateways around Gaza, in effect today, in retaliation for the missile attack.

The lone missile targeted the southern Israeli town of Sderot. It landed in a kindergarten but caused no losses.

Hamas is observing a tacit understanding to halt missile attacks on southern Israel.
