People voted for change in Feb 18 elections: Pakistani PM

Islamabad : Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said the people of Pakistan largely voted for change of system in February 18 elections and it is the responsibility of coalition partners to work for the attainment of that mandate.

He said that any change made for the people of Pakistan should be visible at all levels. The Prime Minister said while chairing the coalition partners parliamentary party meeting in the Parliament House this afternoon.

The Prime Minister also apprised the members about his recent foreign visits.

He said that during his visit to Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt, President Bush assured him that F-16s will be provided at earliest possible time and before his recent visit to USA, these were delivered.

The Prime Minister said that during his visit to USA, President Bush assured him of economic and defence assistance to Pakistan. He said the US President also assured mid-life up gradation of F-16s.

He said that he told the US President that sovereignty of Pakistan is at the top priority of our government so it should be respected and the USA should extend support to strengthen the ongoing democratic process in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister also apprised the parliamentary party members about his visit to Sri Lanka on the occasion of 15th SAARC Summit.

He termed his meeting with Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh as constructive and said that it will prove to be a milestone in the bilateral relationship between India and Pakistan.

Talking about his meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the Prime Minister said he told the Afghan President that we should make bridges and not walls in the bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries.

The Afghan President said that if Pakistan takes one step toward strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries, Afghanistan will take thousand steps in this regard, he added.

The Prime Minister said that during his visit to China the Chinese President extended a warm welcome on his Olympic reception at Great Hall.

Briefing about his meeting with the Chinese Prime Minister, the Prime Minister told that Pak-China relations were discussed in detail.

He said that the Chinese Prime Minister told him that Pak-China relations are based on people to people contacts, extension of multi-dimensional cooperation and full support to the new government in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister informed the meeting that the Prime Minister of China has extended invitation to him to participate in ASEM. He said that he was also invited for bilateral talks in Beijing in October this year by his Chinese Counterpart.

The Prime Minister during the meeting assured the FATA members that education will be provided to their people for awareness along with adequate health facilities.

He said that the government is determined to the economic uplift of the people from that area.
