Kathmandu : Nepali Congress (NC), the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA), has decided to stay in opposition, local leading news website eKantipur reported on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, top NC leaders took the decision to stay in opposition, but to file the nomination of the candidate for the election of the Prime Minister of the new government which has been scheduled for Friday, at a meeting held in capital Kathmandu.
According to NC central leader Laxman Ghimire, the NC will register its nomination for the Prime Minister to ensure the party’s presence at the parliament, even if there is a chance of losing.
Sources report that the NC will nominate party vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel for the Prime Minister’s post.
On Sunday, President Ram Baran Yadav had called on the CA to take initiatives for forming a new government through vote as the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M), the single largest party in the CA, failed to form a new government based on national consensus.
President Yadav had given seven days on July 29 to CPN-M, the largest party of the CA, to form government under consensus and provided additional three days after expiry of the seven days.
Nepal was declared a federal democratic republic in the first CA meeting on May 28. However, due to arguments over power sharing, the CPN-M failed to forge consensus among the CA parties to form anew government till now.
