Cairo : Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has said that the situation in Mauritania is worrisome and the pan-Arab organisation wish to deal with facts on the ground.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday after receiving a report from his assistant for political affairs Ahmad bin Hilli on his recent visit to Mauritania, Moussa said Arab League members should discuss how to protect the Arab leaders.
“This issue should be discussed in the Arab League specially that the ousted (Mauritanian) president is an elected president,” he said.
Bin Hilli’s report had already been sent to the Arab foreign ministers.
This report, said Moussa, included proposals and recommendations on how to deal with the situation in Mauritania, “and they will be tabled at the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting on Sept 10 and 11 in Cairo.”
The League delegation which visited Mauritania and was headed by bin Hilli had met with President of the State Council Mohmmad Ould Abdulaziz, army commanders, MPs and representatives from non-government organisations (NGOs) and political parties.
Bin Hilli concluded following these meetings that “democratic institutes in Mauritania were functioning but the presidency institute,” said Moussa.
Abdulaziz and political leaders in Mauritania informed bin Hilli that they would not allow the political achievement to be undermined, said Moussa.
Abdulaziz also said the current situation in Mauritania was an interim phase during which preparations for elections would be held.
The prime responsibility for stability in Mauritania lies with the Mauritanians themselves with regional and international parties helping them, said Moussa.
