Harare : South African President Thabo Mbeki left Harare without landing the coveted national unity deal between President Robert Mugabe and opposition Morgan Tsvangirai.
Mbeki left Zimbabwe after confirming a possible arrangement between Mugabe and the head of a splinter of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Arthur Mutambara.
Still, government sources say the pact has not been signed due to disagreements with Tsvangirai.
Mbeki, assigned to broker the talks for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), left to Harare for the negotiations following near three-weeks of fruitless talks in Pretoria.
Media said it was a boost for Mbeki to try and cement Zimbabwe national unity.
That South African leader is to chair the SADC at the Summit on the next weekend in Johannesburg.
Botswana that does not approve of Mugabe’s re-election and said it will boycott the SADC Summit if Mugabe goes.
Mbeki went to Angola to brief President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, head of the SADC Security and Defense, on the progress of the talks started July 21st to set up a unity cabinet in Zimbabwe.
