Kolkata : A gun battle took place Saturday afternoon in West Bengal’s Bardhaman district between the police and four people who had ransacked two sweet shops and beaten up the owners, an official said.
The incident took place near Dhemoman coalmine at Asansol town.
“A gang of four local goons ransacked two sweet shops near Dhemoman coalmine and beat up the owners as they refused to pay them monthly extortion money Saturday afternoon. When we intervened, the criminals hid at the coalminers’ slums and started firing,” said R. Rajshekharan, district police superintendent.
“There were four rounds of firing from the police side, but we failed to arrest any one. None of our personnel were injured. They fled before we could reach them,” he said.
Rajshekharan said that men were originally from Bihar and used to steal iron scraps from the coal mine.
