Tension in Ahmedabad as communal skirmishes continue

Ahmedabad : Tension prevailed in parts of Ahmedabad Monday afternoon as groups of two communities clashed once again even as police said they were keeping a close watch on the situation.

A boy returning from school was attacked while passing through Shahpur-Nagariwad area in the walled city. Police lobbed seven teargas shells and rounded up 20 people to bring the situation under control.

People from the two communities hurled stones at each other for more than an hour in the morning in Dariapur, Shahpur and Delhi Darwaza areas in the walled city.

Trouble broke out in Shahpur with crowds throwing stones, glass bottles, bricks and concrete slabs at each other. Panic prevailed in the area and shops quickly downed shutters as people ran helter-skelter.

Police said one person was arrested from Dariapur while one policeman was injured.

Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) P.C. Pande told IANS the situation was being monitored and trouble makers would be dealt with severely.

Policemen were patrolling troubled spots.

The violence followed clashes late Sunday night, when people from the two communities came out in the streets over a minor road accident in Delhi Darwaza area and police had to lob 72 teargas shells and fire one round in the air to disperse the mobs. Four people were injured in the skirmish.
