Vancouver : The body of an Indo-Canadian teen who was reported to have mysteriously drowned in a river here a week ago has been found.
Seventeen-year-old Harnek Aulak went missing in the early hours of Aug 14 when he went to the Fraser bank in Richmond with his girlfriend. Richmond is a fast growing suburb of Vancouver.
He reportedly jumped into the river to save his girlfriend who had slipped into the water. Though he managed to save the girlfriend by pulling her out, Aulak was swept away by the strong current.
After his disappearance, at about 2 a.m., the girlfriend called police immediately.
A passer-by discovered the body early Thursday not far from where the teen had disappeared into the river.
The parents and relatives confirmed that it was the body of their missing son. It was later sent for autopsy.
The tracing of the body ends the week-long ordeal of the family which refused to accept that the teen was dead.
Even when police abandoned their search after three days, the parents and their relatives hired divers to scour the river for any trace of the body.
Dozens of community volunteers had joined the search too.
Aulak was the only son of immigrants from a village near Phagwara in Punjab.
He had just finished school.
