Kolkata : The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) acdres and activists of the Bhumi Uchched Pratiridh Committee (BUPC) led by Trinamool Congress clashed in West Bengal’s Nandigram Thursday. No one was seriously injured in the violence, the police said.
The incident occurred at Bhutargarh area in Nandigram – the region that flared up over a proposed chemical hub project last year with villagers fighting a pitched battle with the state administration and the police against the land acquisition.
“There were some clashes in Nandigram today (Thursday) between rival political groups. I heard that some people were injured in that incident,” state Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told IANS.
However, Bengali language television channels said at least 12 people were injured.
“I don’t have much details about the skirmishes as these type of political conflicts keep happening across the state every day,” Kanojia said.
District officials said the rival groups opened fire and also hurled crude bombs at each other. But no one was seriously injured in the violence.
Nandigram became a hot-spot of violence last year after peasants, backed by the Trinamool Congress-led opposition parties, launched a sustained protest against Indonesia-based Salim Group’s proposed petrochemical project in the area.
In view of much bloodletting, the state government had to abandon the project.
