India may open nuclear sector for private players soon

New Delhi : The government will consider opening up the nuclear sector for private players once it completes bilateral civil nuclear cooperation pacts with other countries, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said here Saturday.

Speaking at the 14th Technology Summit and Technology Platform, organised by the Department of Science and Technology and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Sibal said: “Once negotiations with Russia and other countries are over, the government will look at opening up the sector for private players to participate.”

According to the minister, India at present needs global solutions for three major problems it faces – economic meltdown, terrorism and global warming.

Sibal further called for innovative methods for generating renewable energy, agricultural optimisation and innovations in technological upgradation.

The minister also asked overseas delegates to explore joint venture opportunities with their Indian counterparts.
