According to information on the foreign ministry’s website, Switzerland’s embassy in the Georgian capital Tbilisi will represent Russia on diplomatic issues.

Georgia broke all diplomatic ties with Russia after Moscow recognised the independence of two Georgian breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Aug 26.

Russia’s move came two weeks after the end of a military operation to “force Georgia to peace” that was launched in response to an attack by Georgian troops on the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali. Hundreds of civilians and a number of Russian peacekeepers were killed in the attack.

The Swiss Embassy in Tbilisi said in October that it was ready to represent Russia’s interests in Georgia. Switzerland also represents Cuba and Iran in the US, and the US in Cuba.

The Georgian foreign ministry has stated that it has no objections to Switzerland representing Russia’s diplomatic interests in the country.
