Two CRPF troopers killed in Kashmir ambush

Srinagar : Separatist guerrillas gunned down two paramilitary troopers in an ambush in Jammu and Kashmir Monday, two days before the final and seventh round of assembly elections, police said.

The incident took place in the north Kashmir town of Sopore, 54 km from here, a police officer told IANS here.

The officer said that heavily armed guerrillas fired sharp bursts of automatic fire at the two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men who were part of a patrol in New Colony area near the town’s main bus stand.

“The two jawans were critically wounded in the ambush. They were taken to a hospital where they succumbed to their injuries,” the officer said.

The firing triggered panic in Sopore town, where shopkeepers quickly downed their shutters and people fled the streets.
