The incident occurred in Kanshiram Nagar district, some 300 km from Lucknow.

“According to reports, the incident took place in Dholna village in Kanshiram Nagar, when two sisters went to meet their father in a lockup,” district police chief Luv Kumar told IANS by telephone.

The sisters, residents of Virsua village, alleged that after misbehaving with them, inspector Vijay Kumar tore their clothes, Kumar added.

Violence flared up in the area and some protesters set ablaze a police station and some police vehicles, the police said.

Dorilal, the father, was arrested Monday night for illegally keeping a pistol.

“An inquiry has been initiated into the incident, while the police inspector has been placed under suspension with immediate effect,” said Kumar.

Fearing further violence, additional security has been deployed in the district, he added.
