After casting his vote in a polling center in capital Dhaka, Huda told Xinhua that there would be a good turnout for this election because a congenial environment has been created by the government.

Huda was confident that the election will be internationally acceptable.

According to Bangladesh Election Commission, there were 81,058,698 registered voters out of whom 50.9 percent were female.

The 9th Parliamentary election was scheduled to be held on Jan.22, 2007. Due to the disputes between two major parties on election issues, the political situation deteriorated in the country.

President Iajuddin Ahmed on Jan. 11, 2007 had to declare state of emergency, postponed the election and resigned from the post of chief adviser of caretaker government.

A new caretaker government led by former central bank governor Fakhruddin Ahmed took office on Jan. 12, 2007 and has promised to hold a free and fair election.
