Moderate earthquake shakes Pakistan’s northwest, Islamabad

Islamabad : A moderate earthquake rattled most parts of northwestern Pakistan on Monday, shaking buildings and sending people into the streets in fear, the metrological department said.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, said Dr Chaudhry Qamar-uz Zaman, head of Pakistan a meteorological department.

There were no reports of any casualties or damage, he said.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at 08:37 a.m., was located in Hindu Kush range.

The earthquake was felt in Islamabad, Peshawar and Muzaffarabad, capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

He said the quake hit Swat valley, Peshawar, Malakand, Dir, Hazara, Gilgit, Khyber Agency and Waziristan tribal region.

On October 8, 2005, a 7.6-magnitude quake wreaked havoc in northern Pakistan and Kashmir, killing some 75,000 people and injuring some 100,000 others.

Zaman said that aftershocks may be felt for some time.
