A visible change this year though was that a number of regular clubs and hotels had cancelled New Year celebrations in wake of the Nov 26 Mumbai terror attack.

Candlelight vigils were organised at various places here and in Punjab to remember those who lost their lives in the Mumbai carnage.

The Chandigarh Press Club members organised a function for members to light candles.

In Patiala, 80 km from here, people gathered at the famous Baradari Gardens in the heart of the city with Patiala Divisional Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir leading them in lighting candles.

The police had to resort to a mild cane charge after groups of rowdy youth tried to assault a small group of foreigners at the Sector 17 plaza here during New Year revelry. One youth was detained as the policemen chased away the groups.

Scores of people were seen at the Sector 17 plaza, the main commercial point of this city, and at the famous Sukhna Lake to celebrate the New Year.

Despite dense fog, scores of vehicles could be seen on the roads with people music blaring from their loudspeakers.
