Mumbai : The maiden edition of the women’s version of the Challenger Trophy cricket will be played here from Feb 9 and will serve as a warm-up for the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in March-April.
The country’s top 39 players will be divided into three teams – India A, India B and India C – for the tournament to be held at the Bandra-Kurla Complex, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said here Friday.
The final between the top two teams, following round-robin league matches, will be played Feb 12.
Jhulan Goswami, the International Cricket Council’s Player of the Year in 2007, will lead India A, all-rounder Rumeli Dhar will be in charge of India B and current India captain Mithali Raj will captain India C.
The men’s Challenger Trophy was launched in 1994-95 and the women’s tournament has been designed with the same aim of unearthing fresh talent.
