“Political process in the country is moving forward in the right direction as the nation is preparing for general elections on February 18 but certain elements are trying to derail the democratic process again,” Senator Nisar A. Memon said in a statement here Thursday.

He said that attitude of certain former army officials shows that they have became tool in the hands of anti-democratic elements.

Referring to the statement of former army officials that their
conscience has now awakened, the Minister said that the nation is fully aware of the fact that neither these retired army officials have any representative status nor are they spokesmen of Pakistan Army.

It does not speak well for Air Marshal ® Asghar Khan to harm the democratic forces instead of serving the democracy, he added.

He said President Pervez Musharraf while in uniform or not has always taken positive and concrete steps to serve national interests and democracy which received appreciation of the nation.

“Pervez Musharraf is an elected President under the Constitution and ex-servicemen society has no right to ask for resignation of the President,” he added.

Senator Nisar Memon said that since the general polls are now just seventeen days away the retired army officials are talking about resignation of the President, formation of national government, appointment of new Chief Election Commissioner and launching of movement is nothing but an attempt to create anarchy in the country.

“Therefore, the people can now easily judge into which hands these elements are playing,” the minister said.

He said that ex-servicemen society has no right to play any political role. The sagacious and patriotic masses would decide their destiny with the strength of their vote on February 18 and they did not have any need for undemocratic advice by “ex-servicemen society,” he added.

If the society really wants to serve the country, it should not ask the people to refrain from elections.
