Gaza : A senior Islamic Hamas official said Saturday that the borders between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will be closed on Sunday in coordination between Egypt and Hamas police.
“Security forces from both sides will start on Sunday closing the borders until finalizing the measures aiming at rearranging the movement of exit and entrance,” Mahmoud al-Zahar told reporters on his way from Egypt to Gaza.
About ten days ago, Hamas militants detonated bombs under the cement and metal fence on the borders between southern Gaza Strip and Egypt, allowing hundreds of thousands to flock from Gaza into Egypt.
The crowds entered into Egypt and bought their needs of food and fuel following more than seven months of complete closure of crossings between Gaza Strip and Israel.
On Wednesday, a Hamas delegation headed by al-Zahar held talks with Egyptian officials on closing the fence of the borders and arranging the entrance of Palestinians into Egypt.
“We agreed with Egypt to form joint channels of contacts that lead us to well-organized Palestinian-Egyptian borders,” al-Zahar said, adding that his (deposed) government will do its best to control the movement on the borders.
He said “the visit of Hamas delegation to Egypt was a successful one and Egypt would never accept the idea of making Gaza population starving,” and the coming few days will witness “a series of positive results.”
