Deputy government spokesman Thomas Steg stressed Berlin’s “joy” over Tadic’s win against his ultra-nationalist contender, Tomislav Nikolic.

“The Serbian nation has underlined that it sees in future in Europe. This is good news for Europe,” the spokesperson added.

The German government had repeatedly made clear its support for Tadic whose primary task will be to tackle the unresolved issue of the Serbian breakaway province of Kosovo.

Ethnic Albanian leaders from Kosovo are also expected soon to announce their independence from Serbia in early February.

While most of the 27 European Union countries are willing to signal green light for such a plan, the bloc is also interested in helping Serbia save face by speeding up Belgrade’s accession process.

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, a nationalist, warned earlier that the EU would have to choose between closer relations with Serbia and supporting an independent Kosovo.
