The train with three coaches that came out of a workshop after periodical cleaning hit the elephants, which were taking a nocturnal jaunt around 1 a.m. Monday.

“It was a gruesome scene. One of the elephants was pregnant, and on the impact of the collision, the mammal fell down dead,” Southern Railway Public Relations Officer Om Prakash told IANS.

However, there was no human casualty as the coaches were empty, he added.

It took over 10 hours for the forest, railway and police personnel to remove the carcases of the elephants from the accident site.
