United Nations : Braving bitter cold, a group of Kashmiris Monday staged a rally in New York’s Times Square to press for their right to self-determination pledged by the UN Security Council 60 years ago.
As part of the events marking the Kashmir Solidarity Day on Tuesday, the demonstrators called for an UN-sponsored plebiscite to resolve the long-standing dispute between India and Pakistan.
The participants, including Kashmiri leader Capt (rtd) Shaheen Butt, political activist Shahid Comrade and PML-N leader ahmad jan, raised slogans demanding implementation of the U.N. resolutions to pave the way for the freedom of Kashmiris from the Indian occupation.
Wrapped up in woolies, they carried placards denouncing the Indian actions in occupied Kashmir and in support of Kashmiris’ freedom, warning that Kashmir was a nuclear flashpoint. “Self-determination our birth right,” said one placard.
The demonstrators dispersed after about half an hour.
