German Foreign Ministry’s deputy spokeswoman, Julia Gross stressed at a routine news conference that a ‘sustainable ceasefire’ was needed in Chad in a bid to secure a political settlement of the worsening conflict.

She made clear that no one was interested in destabilization of Chad.

Meanwhile, Gross urged Sudan which is reportedly aiding Chadian rebel groups, to do its share towards the stabilization of Chad.

On Monday, Germany evacuated 50 nationals, among them Germany’s Ambassador to Chad Helmut Rausch, from the civil war-stricken African country.

Most German citizens were airlifted by the French air force.

There are still dozens of Germans in Chad, according to various estimates.

Numerous Germans took refugee in the German embassy in the capital N’Djamena as a result of the violent clashes.

Chadian rebel leaders had reportedly said they had withdrawn from the center of the city to give civilians a chance to flee before a possibly decisive battle.

However a communique by the Chadian army claimed that rebels were driven out of N’Djamena on Sunday following a major counter- offensive.
