At least 10 killed as violence continues in Kenya

Nairobi : At least ten people have been killed in western Kenya in post-election violence, which continues to take its toll in the east African nation, the police confirmed Wednesday.

Spokesman Eric Kiraithe said the ten were killed at Borabu-Bureti border and in Trans Mara district.

He said five were killed by security forces when allegedly being intercepted as they tried to torch a residential house belonging to a senior government official at the troubled border.

“They were found with an assortment of crude weapons and arrows and were just about to torch the house when they were intercepted, ” he said by telephone.

Four people were killed in Kiripwet area of Trans Mara district, according to reports reaching here.

The police said security had been intensified at the border to curb violence and and destruction of property in the two districts since last Friday when former lawmaker David Too was shot dead by a policeman.

Red Cross Kenya said in the five weeks since disputed elections, more than 1,000 people have been killed and 304,000 displaced in violence.

President Mwai Kibaki claimed victory in the presidential vote on Dec. 27 last year, but the opposition says the election was rigged.
