Dubai : India’s one-day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni climbed up seven positions to 11th while Sachin Tendulkar slipped by one spot to ninth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) one-day rankings announced here Thursday.
Dhoni rose on the basis of his brisk 88 against Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Bank Triangular Series in Brisbane Tuesday. He now has 713 rating points while Tendulkar, the lone Indian among the top 10, has 726 points.
Yuvraj Singh, who failed in Brisbane, is the only other Indian among the top 20 batsmen with 700 points in a list headed by Australia captain Ricky Ponting with 822.
There is no Indian player among the top 20 in the bowlers’ list, which is topped by New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond (755 points), who was promoted to No.1 position following South African Shaun Pollock’s retirement this week.
But Bond’s reign at the top is in imminent danger as the second-placed Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori is just nine points adrift. The left-arm spinner is set to overtake his teammate in the five-match ODI series against England starting in Wellington Saturday.
Besides Vettori, Kyle Mills is the other New Zealand bowler in the top 10 and he will be desperate to at least cement his seventh position if he cannot overtake Australian duo Brett Lee and Nathan Bracken and Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidaran.
