Indian, Philippine army chiefs discuss better military cooperation

Manila : Chiefs of the Philippine and Indian armies Thursday discussed ways to enhance cooperation in fighting terrorism and insurgency and other security concerns.

General Deepak Kapoor, chief of the Indian Army, met his Philippine counterpart, Lieutenant General Alexander Yano, during a visit in Manila.

During the meeting, Kapoor also announced India’s donation of 1.3 million pesos ($32,500) of medicines to the Philippine Army.

Lieutenant Colonel Ernesto Torres, Philippine Army spokesman, said Kapoor gave Yano a first-aid kit to represent the donation.

He said the two officials discussed “military-to-military cooperation, insurgency situation in the Philippines and India, counter terrorism, UN peacekeeping operations, military exercises and training, and human rights concerns.”

“The Indian Army has rich combat experience in diverse terrains and also has a distinguished history of serving in UN peacekeeping operations,” Torres noted.

Kapoor also visited Malaysia prior to his trip to the Philippines. He is to return home Saturday.
