As bright sunshine greeted the snow-capped mountains, the Kashmir-bound passengers stranded in Jammu were told the good news that they would be airlifted to Srinagar.

By late Saturday, the IAF had airlifted more than 700 passengers from Jammu to Srinagar, defence spokesperson S.D. Goswami told the media.

Thousands of Srinagar bound passengers were stuck here after the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only road link to the Kashmir Valley, was closed Monday due to heavy snowfall triggering landslides on the road.

At a meeting in Jammu Friday, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had asked the IAF to keep its fleet ready to airlift the passengers if the weather improved.

“The IAF responded to the requirement,” Goswami said. However, several hundreds of passengers are still stranded in Jammu.
