The incident occurred Sunday in the Los Parados bar in the Benito Juarez neighbourhood of Nezahualcoyotl, a city adjacent to Mexico City, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Monday.

The gunmen with assault rifles attacked the bar and made a clean getaway in an untraced direction, officials said adding that a 23-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were injured in the firing.

Officials said the dead, all of whom were customers, ranged between the ages of 25 and 40.

Sources at the state prosecutor’s office said that the initial investigation has ruled out organized criminal activity or a rivalry among drug traffickers as the motive for the attack.

In this area of the city, the so-called Nezahualcoyotl drug cartel, which the authorities consider to be one of the main smugglers in the country, is quite active.
