Their leaders are even thinking of forging an alliance to secure a potential majority and set up government.

President Pervez Musharraf, ex head of the Armed Forces, missed the legislative elections to complete a transition towards civilian power, and the turn out may seal his future.

State-run TV station PTV said the PPP is in the lead with 85 seats of the 269-strong in Parliament, followed by the PML-N of ex PM Nawaz Sharif (65), whom Musharraf ousted in 1999.

So far the coalitions that backed Musharraf, the Muslim League Q (PML-Q) scored 37 and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) 19, while the National Awami Party (ANP) won 10 and other 32 groups had one each.

The analysts consider the PPP and PML-N lead as an unexpected defeat of the PML-Q and MQM coalition and Musharraf himself.

If both decide to set up government the ex general may undergo a political trial as their leaders have been planning.
