The talks lasted around 15 minutes and President Bush extended his congratulations to President Musharraf on the holding of free and free polls, Dawn TV reported.

The US President said the elections were good and would bring stability to the country.

He pledged that the US would continue its support to Pakistan in fighting against terrorism.

Reports say that Bush called Musharraf during a flight from Rwanda to Ghana and the White House press secretary Dana Perino disclosed the call Thursday but did not give any details of the telephonic talk.

The Muslim League-Q party, backed by President Pervez Musharraf suffered defeat in the parliamentary elections.

Musharraf’s rival Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged as the single largest party in the February 18 elections.

Groups of visiting US lawmakers and its envoy in Islamabad have held meetings with the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and reportedly discussed government formation.

Local media reports the US is interested in formation of PPP government with the pro-Musharraf’s PML-Q.

But Zardari says his party will not form government with those who are part and parcel of the former government.
