Berlin : The German government here Friday expressed “great concern” over Turkey’s latest incursion into northern Iraq.
Addressing a routine weekly press briefing, German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger labelled Turkish military operations in northern Iraq a “not inconsiderable risk of destabilization.” “We urge the Turkish government in its fight against terrorism to reduce its steps to the minimum to protect its own people,” Jaeger added.
He warned of “further escalation” of the conflict, while urging Ankara’s compliance with international law.
Jaeger said also that the German embassy was trying to get in contact with Turkey’s national security council.
Around 10,000 Turkish soldiers crossed into Iraq on Thursday evening in a bid to destroy bases of the Kurdish PKK terrorist group.
