New Delhi : The Delhi High Court Monday slapped a Rs.100,000 fine on Delhi Police for illegally detaining three people in separate incidents in the capital last year.
Justice S.N. Dhingra also ordered an enquiry into the matter by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and punishment for the guilty officials.
The matter came to light when two people, Sanjiv and Dalip, approached the court, demanding a compensation of Rs.1 million from Delhi Police for keeping them in custody without any reason.
The duo were arrested Feb 3 last year from Samaypur Badli area and kept in custody for two days without the police registering a case against them. They alleged that they were ready to execute a bail bond but were forced to remain in custody.
“Delhi Police will pay Rs.25,000 each to them and an enquiry will also be initiated against the department by the CBI,” said Justice Dhingra in his order.
In another case, Keshav Kumar was arrested last year from Moti Bagh area for no reason. He also approached the Delhi High court, asking for compensation.
The court awarded him a compensation of Rs.50,000 and ordered a departmental enquiry against the two police officials who had detained him.
