Damascus : Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa arrived here Friday night for talks with Syrian leaders to prepare for the Arab summit, due in Damascus late next month, and the Lebanese political conflict.
Moussa told reporters after arrival that he would discuss with president Bashar Al-Assad on Saturday the Lebanese conflict and preparation for the 20th Arab summit.
He said all Arab conflicts were linked to the summit. Moussa added that his talks with the Syrian officials would deal with these conflicts foremost the Lebanese one.
“We are discussing all Arab issues starting from Lebanon to Sudan and the Palestinian affair particularly to what is happening in Gaza,” he said in answer to question about the Arab League’s efforts to tackle inter-Arab rifts.
On the Arab initiative to tackle the Lebanese presidential conflict, Moussa said a large part was agreed upon by the Lebanese majority and opposition “and the rest remains important and might need another approach.”
The Arab initiative calls for the electing of army commander General Michel Sulaiman as president, then forming a government of national unity and wording a fresh electoral law.
On the military situation in Gaza Strip, Moussa said it was not only about an Arab effort to tackle the issue but an international endeavor to halt the Israeli massacres against the civilians and children.
He believed the Arab foreign ministers, who will meet in Cairo on March 5-6, would adopt a decision regarding the situations in Gaza in which scores of Palestinians were killed by Israeli air strikes in the past two days.
Moussa, commenting on the Arab summit, said preparations were “good” and ongoing.
