Neelu Ranjan, senior special correspondent with Aaj Tak, was later granted bail by a city magistrate.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 1 a.m. when Ranjan, who was returning from a New Year’s party, rammed his car into ice cream seller Pankaj alias Kaka.

Pankaj, who appeared to be in his early 20s, was admitted to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Passers-by informed the police, and Ranjan was arrested from the spot.

“We arrested Ranjan under section 279 (driving or riding in a public way so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life), and 304-A (causing death by rash or negligent act) of the Indian Penal Code,” said a senior police official.

“Ranjan was produced before a city court, which has granted him a bail,” the official added.
