Dhaka : Bangladesh has postponed the ministerial level meeting of the seven-nation group Bimstec on poverty alleviation scheduled this week, citing lack of response from participants, and “political turmoil”.
The meeting, which was postponed at “the last moment”, was slated for Wednesday-Thursday, The New Age newspaper said Monday.
The decision was taken “because of poor response from the members due to political turmoil in most countries of the bloc”, the newspaper said, but did not elaborate.
Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) has Bangladesh, Bhutan India, Myanmar, Nepal Sri Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation as its members.
The last ministerial meeting took place in New Delhi in August 2007. The Dhaka meet was meant to discuss the issue of poverty alleviation further and report to another Delhi meeting later this year.
