Patna : The postcard, almost forgotten in big cities, is still the most popular means of communication in rural Bihar. Realising its importance, the Nitish Kumar government is going to use this medium to advertise its achievements.

The chief minister is bringing out this month special postcards, priced at 25 paise each – half the price of the usual one – with his photograph on top alongside the achievements of his government.

“Nitish Kumar’s picture and salient features of his government and achievements will be printed on the front of the postcards while the reverse will be blank for the sender to scribble his message,” an official source told IANS.

The state government had tied up with the postal department last year for 500,000 special postcards that would cost the government Rs.1 million, postal officials said.

The postcards, called ‘Meghdoot’, will highlight the government’s policies such as the old age pension scheme, the new land acquisition policy and the Right to Information act (RTI).

A brainchild of the state department of information and public relations, the idea is to circulate the picture of Nitish Kumar, who is widely projected as ‘vikash purush’ or man of development.

The postcard will also inform and encourage people to use the Right to Information (RTI) Act. “The postcards will inform people on setting up of a call centre with phone numbers to use the RTI,” an official said.

“Postcards are the lifeline of rural areas,” the official said.

The Nitish Kumar government completed two years in office on Nov 24 last year.
