Bogota : Twelve members of Colombia’s largest and oldest insurgent group have surrendered to the military following stepped up army operations, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Thursday.
A military spokesman in the eastern city of Villavicencio said the guerrillas, belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), surrendered in Cumaribo village in Vichada province, on the border with Venezuela.
Among the rebels who turned themselves in was a unit commander “involved in FARC’s logistic and financial operations”, the spokesman said.
The European Union and the US have listed FARC as a terrorist organisation. Drug trafficking, extortion and kidnapping-for-ransom are FARC’s main means of financing its operations.
