Anoop Kumar Kakde, 32, was arrested for killing Meera Mittal at her C-20-A Gangotri Enclave flat in the Alaknanda neighbourhood.

The police claimed to have seized Rs.13,920 in cash, four gold bangles, three gold chains, four gold lockets and 12 pairs of gold earrings that Kakde had allegedly stolen from the flat after the murder.

Mittal, 51, was found dead Saturday evening with multiple stab wounds when her husband, on tour in Bhopal, tried to call her, did not get a reply, and asked a neighbour to check.

The victim’s children – a daughter and a son – live abroad.

Kakde, who was hired as driver by the family last month without police verification, was missing since the incident.

“After thoroughly inspecting the crime scene, it was clear that there had been no forced entry, nor was there any sign that the flat had been ransacked,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) Anil Shukla said. “Kakde was traced and during sustained interrogation he confessed to killing the victim.

“Kakde disclosed that he had recently started working for the family but on two occasions, the deceased had scolded him for not coming in time and not driving properly. On Saturday when he was again scolded he decided to eliminate her and took alcohol in the day.”

The police official said after dropping the deceased to her house Saturday evening, Kakde again entered the house on the pretext of asking for a glass of water and then demanded Rs.1,000 as advance salary.

When Mittal refused, Kakde got angry and picked up a knife from the kitchen. He than allegedly stabbed her a few times and decamped with cash and jewellery, Shukla said.

According to the police, Kakde – who hails from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh – was staying with his family at Sangam Vihar. His father and three brothers also work as drivers in the same neighbourhood of Alaknanda.

Police said Kakde’s former employer had also sacked him for bad behaviour.
