They also agreed to intensify their efforts for the sake of steering peace negotiations in the pursuit of the Palestinian independent state objective and in a bid to end the plight of the Palestinian people.

Mubarak said in a press conference Tuesday that they discussed bilateral relations and regional political developments.

He added that discussions also focused on Arab-Turkish relations and the situation in the Arab Gulf area. They both agreed that their common interest calls for containing existing regional conflicts and any unrest and preventing any more from occurring in future.

Turning to the issue of the Iranian nuclear file and whether it represented a threat to the area, Mubarak said he had “no detail on Iran’s nuclear activities” but stressed that whether the nuclear programme was dangerous or not, such issues should be resolved peacefully without resorting to violence.

Gul told reporters his talks with Mubarak focused on the situation in Iraq and stressed that stability in Iraq was “very important for Turkey.” On the Palestinian issue, Gul expressed hope that, in the aftermath of Annapolis, there will be, before long an independent Palestinian state living side by side with Israel.

He said that he saw eye to eye with Mubarak on ways to contain terrorism.
