United Nations : UN agencies reported the critical situation in Southern Africa, especially in Mozambique, due to floods caused by heavy rains.
The UN office in Maputo said swollen rivers have killed seven people and displaced dozens of thousands, adding that despite good preparation, the situation may change due to the fury of waters.
Nongovernmental organizations in Mozambique warned that 250,000 people in the low region of the Zambezi Valley are at risk, as the level of the Cabora Bassa dam continues to increase.
The floods also affect neighboring countries like Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Zambian President Levvy Mwanawasa asked for international aid for the victims of the floods, which also damaged roads, bridges and crops.
According to preliminary estimates, 1.5 million Zambians might be affected by the heavy rains.
In Malawi, where one million people might be affected by the natural disaster, the commercial corridor that links the country with Mozambique is closed.
UN agencies such as the World Food Program and the Children’s Fund are providing assistance to those countries in Southern Africa.
