A 26-year-old female environment activist let herself down a rope which was tied to a tree and was hovering seven meters above the rail tracks, a spokesman for the federal police announced.

A police helicopter notified the train driver to halt the train in time.

Special police forces freed the environment activist and removed her from the scene.

She was detained following the incident.

According to nuclear power opponents, the train was en route to the Dutch port of Rotterdam and was carrying a 1,000-ton load of radioactive material, destined to be shipped for Russia.

Germany has been the scene of repeated anti-nuclear power protests in recent years.
