Washington : The US has said that it is closer to a deal with the Czech Republic to deploy radar units in that country as part of the US missile defence system in Europe.
“We are moving ever closer to an agreement with the Czech Republic. Hopefully, we’ll have something to announce within a matter of weeks, and not longer than that,” Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Tuesday.
Talks with the Czech Republic “continue to progress very, very well”, he said, adding that there is no progress in the US diplomatic efforts to engage Russia.
The US plans to base missile interceptors in Poland and radar units in the Czech Republic as part of a project to extend the missile defence system to Europe. Russia has voiced opposition to the plan.
The US has claimed that the missile defence system is aimed at states and groups in the Middle East that are seeking weapons of mass destruction and not against Russia.
