Countries of origin responsible for labour problems: study

Abu Dhabi, Jan 25 (IANS) A study on migrant labourers by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) has said the problems migrant workers face abroad is the result of bad recruitment practices followed in their respective countries of origin.

Roger Plant, head of the ILO’s special programme of action to combat forced labour, has presented the study at the Gulf forum on contractual and temporary labour in Abu Dhabi, WAM news agency reported Friday.

The recruitment agencies in some countries cheat workers by giving them false promises or mislead them on the real work environment. These agencies don’t care for the welfare of the workers, the report said.

The working conditions of the temporary labourers in the Gulf states have attracted the attention of many countries which are now showing greater interest in solving the issue without infringing upon their labour or human rights, Plant said in his study.

The study has urged the labour exporting countries to protect the interests of the workers and reduce the huge fees they are being charged, which often pushed them into lifelong debts.
