Aide of anti-U.S. Shiite cleric shot dead in holy Najaf

Baghdad : Gunmen assassinated an aide to firebrand Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in the holy city of Najaf in south of Baghdad, a local police source said on Saturday.

“Unknown gunmen shot dead Shiek Qais al-Mudhaffar, a leader of Sadr political movement and an aide to Moqtada al-Sadr while he was returning to house in al-Jam’iyah neighborhood in northern the city of Najaf, some 160 km south of Baghdad,” the source from the city police told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

On Thursday night, Shiek Abul Mahdi al-Karbalai, another leading Shiite cleric survived a bomb attack in the holy city of Karbala, 110 km south of Baghdad, the city police said.

Karbalai was slightly wounded and two of his bodyguards were killed and two others wounded, they said.
