Berlin : The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Karen Koning AbuZayd, harshly criticized the international community for its indifference to the inhuman Israeli blockade of Gaza.
“I am concerned over the apparent indifference of the world,” the UN official wrote in a commentary for Saturday’s edition of the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper.
Koning Abuzayd said Gaza was on the verge of becoming the first region in the world where a terrible misery has been created intentionally with the “knowledge, consent and support of the international community.”
She expressed her “deep sadness over the total blockade of Gaza.” According to Koning Abuzayd, Israel’s blockade of Gaza has not only had an impact on the UNRWA’s work but has also lowered chances for a peaceful solution of the Mideast conflict.
She added there were signs that sealing off Gaza “played into the hands of those who have no interest in peace.”
The pressure on the international community to restore normalcy has never been greater, Koning AbuZayd said.
“Hungry, unhealthy and angry people are not good partners for peace,” she pointed out.
The Zionist regime has tightened its political and economic blockade of Gaza with the tacit support of the US and several European Union states.
The illegal Jewish state has killed and wounded dozens of Palestinians during its recent military attacks in Gaza.
