Nairobi : At least 13 people were killed in Kenya’s central town of Nakuru as fresh violence broke out.
Residents said that violence took place Friday night in Kaptembwa, Mwariki, Ponda Mali and Kithima areas, though an overnight curfew imposed by the authorities was in place.
Rival gangs of young men battled with machetes, metal bars, bows and arrows, while thick smoke billowed up from burning buildings.
Business centres have closed and Nakuru has turned into a ghost town. Residents from the worst hit suburbs of Shabab and Kaptembe have sought refuge in churches and police stations.
“Nakuru town has been shut down… hundreds are injured,” Kenya Red Cross head Abbas Gullet said Saturday.
Some 700 people have been killed in clashes between rival ethnic and political groups since December’s disputed polls.
Though President Mwai Kibaki met opposition leader Raila Odinga Thursday for reconciliatory talks, the violence continues in many parts of the country.
Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan, who is in Kenya to mediate attempts for a political solution, is visiting some of the areas affected by the clashes.
